If you are going to install new circuits in your home or would just like to increase the safety of your electrical system, you should consider using the new AFCI circuit breakers.

Your regular circuit breaker will only trip when there is a current overload but there are still many dangerous situations that they will not trip for, such as fire-causing arcs and shock-inducing ground faults. The new AFCI circuit breakers will trip for all of the above conditions giving you a higher level of protection, and a reduced risk of fire.

These new high tech breakers have LED indication that lets you know which condition caused the breaker to trip, and the trip response time is faster. The only down side is that they cost more than traditional breakers, if you have the extra money to spend, go with the new AFCI circuit breakers.
