Greetings,

I have a 14/2 romex from the circuit breaker to an outlet that I want to double gang as a dual outlet box. from this junction I want one leg to extend to a nearby light switch to power an over head light and another leg to extend to the next outlet.

I wired in as I thought would be the appropriate manner of doing so, by tying all three of the whites [source/leg-to-switch/leg-to-other-outlet] together in wire nut, tying two blacks, from source and leg to light switch, adding a jumper to wire into the first of the two double-ganged outlets. The double-ganged outlets are tied together with jumpers from hot, neutral and ground wires. The hot wire from the leg that extends to the next outlet is tied into the second of the double-ganged outlets, forming a hot line that runs through all of the outlets, out to the next in the series.

When I test the outlets with my ground tester in both of the double-ganged outlets, I get an 'Open Neutral' reading. When I test the next outlet that an leg off of this junction extends to, the reading is correct.

I have checked my connections and all is well, so I think I must have an elementary mistake in this current configuration. Should I make a jumper from the tied together neutral lines to extennd to the first of the double-ganged outlets? ???

Hello,

You do need to have a neutral going to each receptacle, if you do not have neutral jumpers pigtailed from your splice in the double gang box to one of the silver screws on each receptacle than that is your problem.
