Title: Question about home networking
Post by: mws0019 on May 24, 2012, 07:05:51 PM
I am building a home and asked for data and phone cables to be run to each room.  They ran Cat5e cables for both of these lines which looks to be correct from researching.

Today I went over to the home and the faceplates for the data and the phone were exactly the same.  A big jack the size of an ethernet cable end and each plate had Cat5e written on it.  Will a phone cable plug into this and work correctly?  I called the guy who did the installation and he said yes, but I have not seen or heard of this before.  Looking online, it looks like there are clearly different face plates for a phone line and for an ethernet cable.

If it is wired correctly it will work, I've seen it done before. The only possible downside is that there is a little play in the connection with the smaller phone connector and the larger jack, and it is possible for it to be knocked out of contact with the contacts that make the connection. But unless people are kicking the jacks I would not think it would be a problem. Even if it would happen it would only require unplugging it and plugging it back in straight.

Thank you for your reply.

You are right about the play, I took two cables over to the home and they both plug in, I just hope they work as designed when everything is up and running.

Since you are building you may want to have some of these put in if you have phones and stuff that charge USB.

I installed a few in our home and find them very useful.
