Title: closet snafu
Post by: dewhurstaj on November 25, 2014, 06:18:36 PM
Utility Closet Snafu
Closet light functioned flawlessly for 17 years & now no power, 0 voltage, feeding into the box.
I have 0 volts between black wire & gnd.
I have 0 volts between black wire & white wire.
I ohmed out the switch, light fixture & bulb – all good.
Checked all the circuit breakers & gnd fault receptacles.
Here are my questions:
1. How do I located the cable / wire upstream that feeds this utility closet box?
2. I checked all nearby outlets w/o any success.
3. I tried a cable tracker from Harbor Freight that will be going back tomorrow.
I am OK spending $125 for a tool that will help resolve this snafu.
I do not want to tear off the drywall to fix this problem.
Thanks!
Andy

Seems to be a lost feed problem, a lot of time lighting is not on the same circuit as receptacles. The problem could be in a nearby switch or even light fixture depending on how it is wired.

The best tool is a good meter and a lot of work.
