I'm wiring a plug back on a little 110V air conditioner. It has a molded coper stranded wire inside. Of course I know which wire is ground, but is there a way to tell which wire should be placed on the positive side? The only thing I can see which might distinguish it would be that one side of the cable is printed on. Does this mean any thing?

When you are dealing AC voltage it is a hot and a neutral and not a positive. Usually with AC voltage one of the wires will have a rib on it, that would be your neutral conductor and the smooth one would be your hot. Also if it is a new plug the larger prong will be the neutral and the smaller one will be the hot.
