I'm trying to replace a wall switch for a garbage disposal.  The original switch had a 12G black wire pushed in the top location, a 12G black wire around the top post and a 14G wire pushed into the bottom location.  There was no ground post and there is no white wire.

The new switch is a little different.  I put the wire on the post to the new ground post.  The top wire on the top post and the bottom wire on the bottom post.  Disposal did not come on when power was turned back on.  How do I tell which wire should go where?

Is there anything else that is not working?

Thanks.  I figured it out in the meantime.  You guessed it.  The dishwasher was plugged into an outlet and was not working.  Upon further investigation, two of the wires had to be connected to the same post.

Sorry I did not get back to you sooner, things have been crazy lately. Happy to hear you figured it out! My only comment would be in regards to connecting two wires to a single screw terminal, the proper way to do it is to connect them with a wire nut to a short piece of wire, and then connect that wire to the screw terminal. It is not permitted by code to connect multiple wires to a single screw. It may cause future problems.
